Purchase options and add-ons
With AngularJS, you can quickly build client-side applications that run well on any desktop or mobile platform, using REST web services for backend processes. You may have heard that the learning curve for this JavaScript MVC framework is too steep, but that’s not the case. This practical guide provides a hands-on approach to learning AngularJS that will have you building high-quality applications and websites in no time.
Along with a conceptual understanding of the framework, you’ll also gain direct experience with AngularJS by building a sample application throughout the book. If you’re familiar with JavaScript, web development, and software design concepts and patterns, this book is the perfect way to get started.
- Understand how AngularJS differs from other MVC frameworks
- Learn about AngularJS controllers, views, and models by diving into the book’s sample project
- Connect your working application to public REST services
- Build the application’s security layer with non-REST AngularJS services
- Explore the basics of building and testing AngularJS directives

About the author

Ken Williamson is a best-selling author of both crime novels and technical books on software engineering.
Ken's Crime Novels:
Ken spent much of his time working as a technology expert for law enforcement and government agencies. He often had daily contact with detectives and commanders in various departments including homicide departments. He gained a wealth of valuable knowledge from his association with law enforcement officials, homicide detectives, and public figures over the last thirty years.
Ken often draws from other valuable personal experiences he had when writing murder mysteries. For example, he unknowingly knew and worked with a person that was later identified as a serial killer. Several years later, that person was convicted of multiple murders and sentenced to life in prison. Having actually known a serial killer personally gave Ken great insight into how the mind of a serial killer actually works. He often draws on that experience and others when writing.
Technical Books:
When it comes to software engineering, Ken is a highly trained software engineer and architect with over twenty years of experience. His first programming language was Assembly language using the 6502 chip. He moved on to C and C++ and eventually to Java and JavaScript. He has designed and written mobile, desktop and server software for some of the biggest companies in the world.
Ken holds a BS in Computer Science from Kennesaw State University. He is the founder of several Open Source projects including Ulbora CMS; he is also the founder and CTO of Ulbora Labs in Atlanta, GA. Ken has also contributed to many other Open Source projects over the years. He makes his home in Atlanta, GA with his wife Sherry. You can find Ken at www.ken-williamson.com.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 28, 2015I hate writing bad reviews because of all the work and resources that go into a book. However, I bought this based on the O'Reilly brand to help a coworker get up to speed with AngularJS. Within a few minutes of looking over the book I wanted to throw it in the trash. This book was released in March 2015 and claims to address AngularJS 1.3, but doesn't reflect fundamentally important changes to things like controllers. The first thing that caught my eye is it teaches the pre- 1.2 $scope binding instead of the clearer controllerAs/this syntax.. which is a big deal. There's other annoyances, like suggesting you spend time setting up netbeans or focusing on rest, but not mentioning the word asynchronous, much less discussing $q, .then, promises, or resolve. I've wasted enough resources on this book. The only thing I like was the amount of focus on testing, hence the two stars, but I doubt the reader could make anything worth testing based off the information the author provided. THIS WAS MY FIRST TERRIBLE O'REILLY BOOK. DON'T MAKE IT YOURS.
If you want to learn AngularJS buy anything else, or take the free CodeSchool tutorials on the angular site. The intros are childish, but the information is current. For something more advanced, look at John Papa's Angular style guide. https://github.com/johnpapa/angular-styleguide
- Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2017Great book for learning Angularjs from the ground up.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2016Only book that made sense of Angularjs 1.0
- Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2016This book was way too basic for my needs. This may be because it's a year old and Angular is changing quickly, but I bought this instead of "AngularJS: Up and Running" because "Learning AngularJS" was publishing more recently. The book took far too much time on repeating its unit testing methods, when I really just wanted to learn syntax and all the features in Angular.

Recomiendo este libro a cualquiera que esté empezando con angularjs. Cubre temas básicos y avanzados.
Aprendí angular en el trabajo y me hubiera gustado haber encontrado este libro antes.

1.0 out of 5 stars Useless. Misleading. Waffle.
This book is not really about Learning AngularJS. It is a collection of poorly explained examples with very little actual content, lots of long unhelpful code 'examples', and lots of stuff about other things only related to Angular, such as pages of css and html, oh and how to use Netbeans IDE. It also has some fundimental mistakes, although they may just be the author's focus not being on Angular itself but on the particular 'example' they are waffling on about.
It is too sparse for someone wanting to learn Angular, and too simplistic for someone wanting to develope a real Angular application.
Useless. Misleading.
