Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for Business: A No-Nonsense Guide to Data Driven Technologies
Purchase options and add-ons
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning are now mainstream business tools. They are being applied across many industries to increase profits, reduce costs, save lives and improve customer experiences. Organizations which understand these tools and know how to use them are benefiting at the expense of their rivals.
Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for Business cuts through the hype and technical jargon that is often associated with these subjects. It delivers a simple and concise introduction for managers and business people. The focus is very much on practical application and how to work with technical specialists (data scientists) to maximize the benefits of these technologies.
Steven Finlay is a data scientist with more than 20 years' experience of developing practical machine learning-based solutions. He holds a PhD in management science and is an honorary research fellow at Lancaster University in the UK. He is currently Head of Analytics for Computershare Loan Services (CLS) in the UK. Dr Finlay has published a number of practically focused books about machine learning, artificial intelligence and financial services.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2023This book is a great introduction to AI and why AI matters to a business, I found it easy to understand.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2023If you’re new to AI/ML and/or want to understand some key concepts beyond just the technical side, such as what makes sense from a business perspective, this is a great book!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2023The author is very grounded both in explaining AI and evaluating criteria for usage. I believe the right issues are raised and I feel much better informed on the topic. Nice work Steven!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2020As a global technology executive, I now recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand AI/ML. While it covers considerable depth on the technology and just enough on what statisticians/data scientist do, it's extremely simplified for any reader. It's an excellent read for executives, business and technology leaders alike and well crafted for anyone who wants to understand how AI/ML works, key concepts, how to operational it in a firm and ethics/privacy considerations that can increase risk to its use. What I also found most important is that the author provides a reality check on how important it is that folks dabbling in AI/ML have clear business drivers and clear target value outcomes. Get a strategy for using data first - dumping data in lakes, studying it and hoping you find gold in there is usually wishful thinking. This book will help you get started out on the right foot. Great read!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2018This is a great book. It covers what can be very complex topics, but is written in a way that makes them very easy to understand. If you’re looking for an introduction to AI and Machine Learning, I can’t think of a better resource.
For business folks evaluating whether these technologies may benefit their organization, this provides a great framework. For students entering the business and/or tech world, this would be a great starting point. Though it is not a technical reference, I think it gives developers and IT folks a good understanding of how others are evaluating their work.
Even if you’re not in one of the categories above, you’ve likely seen ton of news articles discussing (but not always fully explaining) these technologies. This book would be great for you as well.
I’ve read a lot of books and articles on these topics, but there’s nothing I can point to that provides a better overview.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2018Kudos are well deserved for the author demystifying some of the biggest and least understood buzzwords out there today: AI. Machine learning. Big data....
Finally a straightforward discussion of these advanced concepts wrapped in an easily-accessible and understandable fashion. If you're curious about the topics and nervous about buying an in-depth tome in which you will feel lost in jargon and technical mumbo-jumbo, buy this one. The author is clearly an expert in the topic area and does a fantastic job of explaining it to mortals.
Pick this one up, you'll be glad you did.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2020A clear and concise book that walks you through some complicated topics, whilst demystifying the hype and providing a balanced guidance on how to approach them.
A must read for any business person embarking on advanced analytics.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2019Love this book, it explains basic concepts without pretending to be over-smart.
